Hello there! This review is not over a restaurant, but a meal kit that I have been using called Purple Carrot. When I am not eating out for the blog, I prefer to make healthy meals at home. However, similar to many people, I find it hard to make time to meal prep. Especially because I’m lactose intolerant and don’t do too well with gluten either, meal prepping can be very difficult. This is why I chose to try out Purple Carrot during my time in NYC. This meal kit is one that is delivered to your house every week (or you can skip weeks and do it whenever you feel like it!). They have around 6 different meals on the menu you can choose from each week. However, the best part about it is that its 100% vegan and they have plenty of gluten free options for all the other people out there like me! You also have the option to upgrade your weekly box with additional breakfast, lunch, or dinners. I haven’t done this yet because I get all the food I need from the standard box size since it’s just me but the options always look good. They also occasionally surprise you with free gifts in your box. I’ve gotten two different types of vegan milk (Flax and Cashew) and a vegan chocolate bar to try out!
Onto my experience! I’ve been getting a box every week for about 2 months now. Each box comes with 3 meals and each meal serves two people (or you can get a box for four people as well). This plan is nice for me because I always have leftovers so I have lunch for the next day and am not tempted to go out and get something unhealthy or spend more money. At first, I was skeptical about the meal kit because before this point I had not tried many vegan meals and my preconceived notions told me it would be bland and not super great. I decided to give it a try anyway and I have been pleasantly surprised at the delicious pallet of flavors with each meal I’ve gotten so far. Had I not made the meals myself I would never have guessed they were vegan at all. The meals are also very diverse which keeps me from getting bored with the same foods, which is a big problem I have had in the past. With Purple Carrot I’ve gotten things such as soups, salads, stir fry’s, and even a vegan & gluten free pizza which was probably my favorite thing so far.
The meals come pre-portioned with detailed instructions on how to prepare them, making it really quick and easy to throw together. My only issue is that I don’t have a blender or food processor here with me in New York and I’d say about 50% of meals require one to make some type of sauce. I make do without one though and the meals are still super amazing. I just have a chunky sauce instead of a smooth one.
Overall if you want a super convenient meal kit and one that will help you eat cleanly and has a ton of variety and flavor profiles try out Purple Carrot! I’ve made a list of some of my favorite things I’ve gotten so far so that you can get an idea of what type of things they come up with each week.
